Sciatica and Nerve Pain Treatment in Camberley
Gentle, Effective Osteopathic Relief for Sciatica and Nerve Pain
Sciatica and nerve pain can be sharp, burning or shooting, and may travel from your lower back into your buttock, thigh or leg. It can make simple things like sitting, walking or sleeping feel difficult – and it’s common to feel worried when the pain doesn’t settle quickly.
I’m Claire, a registered osteopath based in Camberley. I regularly see patients with sciatica and nerve‑related back pain, and I use a combination of hands‑on treatment, movement advice and exercises to help reduce pain and improve how you move.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a type of nerve pain that usually comes from irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down into your leg. It can be caused by several things – for example, a disc issue, joint irritation, muscle spasm or a combination of factors.
Common symptoms people describe include:
-
Pain in the lower back, buttock, thigh or calf
-
Sharp, burning, shooting or electric‑shock‑like pain down the leg
-
Pins and needles, tingling or numbness in the leg or foot
-
Pain that’s worse with sitting, bending, coughing or sneezing
-
A feeling of weakness or heaviness in the leg
Not everyone has all of these symptoms, and not all leg pain is true “sciatica” – part of my role is to assess what’s likely to be going on and whether osteopathy is appropriate.

When should I seek urgent medical help instead of osteopathy?
Most people with sciatica or nerve pain can safely be assessed and treated in clinic. However, there are some “red flag” symptoms where you should contact your GP, NHS 111 or A&E urgently instead of booking an osteopathy appointment. These include:
-
Difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels
-
Numbness around your genitals or inner thighs (saddle area)
-
Severe, worsening weakness in one or both legs
-
Sciatica after a significant fall, accident or trauma
-
Unexplained weight loss, fever or feeling very unwell
If you’re unsure whether it’s safe to book, you’re welcome to contact me first and I can advise whether osteopathy is appropriate or whether you should seek medical attention.
How can osteopathy help with sciatica?
As an osteopath, I look at how your spine, pelvis, hips and surrounding muscles are moving, and how they may be affecting the nerves in your lower back and leg.
Treatment is tailored to you and may include:
-
Gentle joint mobilisation to improve movement in the spine and pelvis
-
Soft tissue techniques to ease tight or protective muscles
-
Stretching and movement techniques to reduce irritation around the nerve
-
Advice on positions, pacing and everyday activities to avoid aggravating factors
-
Simple, targeted exercises to support your recovery and reduce the chance of flare‑ups
Sciatica can vary from mild and short‑lived to more persistent or severe. For many people, a short course of osteopathic treatment combined with self‑care advice can make a real difference to pain and function.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms, and how long you’ve had them. As a general guide:
-
Some people with recent, mild symptoms feel much better after 3–5 sessions
-
More persistent or complex nerve pain may need a longer course of treatment and ongoing management
I don’t block book appointments – we review your progress together and agree a plan that feels right for you.
What to expect at your first appointment
Your first appointment is a 60‑minute new patient consultation, which includes:
-
A detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history and any previous investigations
-
A physical examination and movement assessment to understand what may be contributing to your pain
-
An explanation of my findings and whether osteopathy is appropriate
-
Hands‑on treatment where suitable
-
Clear advice on what you can do at home to support your recovery
Follow‑up appointments are 30 minutes and focus on:
-
Reviewing how you’ve been since the last session
-
Ongoing hands‑on treatment
-
Progressing exercises and advice as things improve
You’re welcome to ask questions at any time, and we’ll always work at a pace and pressure that feels comfortable for you.
